📜 CHAPTER I: Bond of Ages (The Byzantine Legacy)
A curatorial study of a burgundy skirt with original calligraphy and Persian–Byzantine references.
Part I: Imperial Purple and Sacred Encoding
This one-of-a-kind garment from the Alta Moda collection represents a profound processual dialogue between two of the most elevated aesthetic spheres of the ancient world: Sasanian Persia and imperial Byzantium. Its defining chromatic feature is a rich, weighty burgundy ground that, in the history of dress, evokes exclusively the sacred imperial purple. In Constantinople, this pigment was protected by law and reserved solely for the highest ranks of the ruling hierarchy.
In the upper hemisphere of the garment, the artist applied fluid spirals freehand in tones of celestial turquoise and violet, symbolising the passage from earthly power to spiritual transcendence. The entire composition is interwoven with pronounced, raised gold edging that directly echoes the ancient sacred technique of cloisonné (partitioned enamel), used in the jewellery of Byzantine empresses, and the jewelled initials of royal manuscript illuminations associated with Hagia Sophia.
Part II: Asemic Calligraphy and the Semantic Trace
The small, rhythmic gold strokes and undulating lines bordering the fabric’s transitions visually correspond to the medieval tradition of so-called pseudo-script. In textile history, weavers often could not literally read the text, so they transformed it into a purely decorative pattern intended to lend a garment gravitas, mystery and a spiritual dimension. On this creation, the script does not serve as a literal historical source; instead, it functions as asemic visual poetry.
At the skirt’s lower hem, the gold lines close into interconnected oval structures: a direct subconscious parallel to Sasanian royal medallions (roundels), which in Persia symbolised the Tree of Life and sovereign protection. The undulating Baroque helix along the garment’s side introduces kinetic dynamism to the entire creation: the garment is not static; unfortunately, it comes to life only through the movement of the body, compelling the viewer’s eye continually to follow the ascending gold line.
